One of the most rewarding coastal experiences in Guyana is a visit to the Mahaica River, home to the country’s national bird—the remarkable Hoatzin. This early-morning river excursion offers intimate wildlife encounters, peaceful scenery, and a deeper appreciation of Guyana’s unique biodiversity.
Early Morning Coastal Journey
Travel along the coast to the Mahaica River, one of several freshwater rivers that flow into the Atlantic Ocean. Board a boat before sunrise and glide gently upstream as dawn breaks over the river.
Hoatzin Observation
Observe the Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) in its natural habitat. This unusual bird is unique among living birds, possessing a foregut with microbial fermentation similar to that of ruminant animals. As the sun rises, Hoatzins perch openly to sunbathe, revealing their striking plumage, rufous crests, red eyes, and bright blue facial skin.
Birdlife & Wildlife Encounters
In addition to Hoatzins, the Mahaica River supports rich birdlife, including:
Mammal sightings may include Red Howler Monkeys, Squirrel Monkeys, Neotropical River Otters, and—if fortunate—the rare Golden-handed Tamarin.
Riverside Breakfast & Return
Enjoy a traditional home-prepared breakfast along the river before returning through scenic rice fields, completing a peaceful and enriching morning experience.
Discover Guyana’s national bird and the quiet beauty of the Mahaica River at sunrise.
